Making It Meaningful
  • Building the bond: Regarding Alfred

A compassionate animal lover rescued a guinea pig near death and nursed it back to health, renewing my belief in the healing power of love.

    The long walk to goodbye

Whether I'm helping pets heal or helping their owners say goodbye, my job in veterinary oncology brings special patients and their families into my life who remind me why I love pets—and my work.

    Service in a strange land

You must watch what you eat. You can't drink the water or even brush your teeth with it. Nothing is sterile. And yet, my experiences at a spay and neuter clinic in the Dominican Republic have been among the most rewarding in my career.

    Diagnosis: blocked!

My own illness gave me a glimpse into the tough road to recovery the patients at our clinic face every day—and how my care can make a difference.

Big loser is a big winner

What's an over-the-hill pooch to do when her winsome curves have disappeared beneath layers of fat? Winnie, a 10-year-old Schnoodle, jumped on the underwater treadmill and exercised her way to fame in the Big Dog/Big Loser Weight Loss Competition, a contest launched by Anne Chauvet, DVM, Dipl.

    A safe haven for pets

My idea to help abused families blossomed into a program that shelters pets while their families get the help they need to escape dangerous situations and rebuild their lives.

    The one that flew away

My fondest wish is to never see this very wild--and very special--patient again.

    The pet connection

Sharing my love for animals helped me reach out to a student struggling with a drug addiction.

    Trapped in Paradise

Visiting exotic locales, helping animals and people in need. Sounds exciting, doesn't it? It can be - or you can find yourself frustrated, disillusioned, and disappointed, as I did.
